Fish on the way out - "party", "snorkel", "eat, drink and be merry" - and fish on the way home

These typical Thai big game trollers are probably the best value for money fishing in the world. A whole days fishing for only 12,000 Baht including lunch and soft drinks.

  • Great value for money
  • Crew with unsurpassed local knowledge
  • Flexible trips - fishing /swimming etc.

Each boat usually carries 4 multiple trawls and 2 outriggers. Only once in my history on these boats, six years, have I failed to catch anything and a normal days fishing is usually around 20 fish with over 40 being my biggest catch.

Expect to catch a variety of tuna and if the outriggers go off, watch out, there’s big stuff about. We recommend fishing parties of no more than 6 but the boats will easily handle twice that number of passengers.

Included
Lunch - a typical lunch is chicken & fried rice, fresh tuna we catch ourselves and fresh fruit
Included
Soft drinks & chilling facilities
Not Included
Hotel pick-up & return service, although all hotels will organize a taxi for you & there is a taxi rank at Chalong Pier
Not Included

The Burma Banks

Continuing north into Myanmartian waters, if that’s what the sea off Myanmar (Burma) is called, we have to call in at Victoria to pick up an obligatory “guide” before we are allowed to continue our journey to the “Burma Banks” which has some of the best bill-fish fishing within the comfortable range of most of our “overnight” boats.

The Burma Banks are a series of flat topped underwater mountains covering a huge area of around 1,500 square kilometers. The waters around the “banks” are 300/350 meters deep and gradually rise to 15 meters from the surface, making this vast area inaccessible to commercial trawlers who in the past few years have decimated much of the Andaman Sea.

Situated 180Km North West of the Similan Islands and 90 to 180 Km due west of Ranong (Thailand) and Kawthaung, Myanmar (Burma) Nearly half way to the Andaman Islands (India) in international waters although economic rights are claimed by the Myanmar Government.

Because of strong currents and no place to “run” for protection from foul weather the “banks” can only be visited, for safety reasons, during our “high” season mid- February to mid-April.

Obviously there is nothing to see, but you’re here for the fishing and this is one of the best “bill” fishing areas anywhere, with Marlin and Sailfish in abundance.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands

And on to the ultimate in Big Game Adventure Fishing completely awesome fishing in even more awesome surroundings.

Approximately 600 Km north-west of Phuket lies one of the last pristine fishing grounds left on earth, the celebrated Andaman Islands. In fact it was in the early 1990s that the first friendly contact was made with the Sentinelese, one of the few remaining indigenous tribes, which prior to this greeted newcomers with spears, bows and arrows. The Indian government still strictly prohibits visitation to North Sentinel Island due to the hostility of the natives and the dangers involved in navigating the coral reefs surrounding the island where stories about a sunken Portuguese galleon loaded with gold abound.

In the Andaman and Nicobar group there are approximately 570 islands of which only around 40 are permanently populated. Situated closer to Thailand in the Bay of Bengal this tropical Indian outpost is one of the last unspoiled fishing destinations on earth, a place where your wildest fishing ambitions are liable to come true.

Around Little Andaman Island keep your eyes peeled for the infamous Andaman Saltwater Crocs which could steal your catch and all your tackle. Growing to 8 or 9 meters long this is a serious predator that laughs at 100lb line.

While fishing off Barren Island, around 130km from Port Blair our visitors often take a photo opportunity, away from their fishing, of a smoking volcano which stated smoldering in the late 1990’s and still occasionally covered our boats with ash.

Sorry to relate, that at present, due to Indian bureaucracy and the time/costs involved in getting permits etc. these islands are now too expensive to visit, hopefully this is only temporary setback. As this is the ultimate in Big Game / Adventure Fishing.

While we wish to resume trips to the Andamans and are at present seeking assistance from the Indian authorities, we are still led to believe there is still an embargo, of sorts, on boats from Phuket.

“Times and Seasons”

The Sea Gypsies of Rawai depart and arrive home around high tide hence the times you can go out vary and in "low season" the weather has to be taken into consideration, as there are assorted combinations of trips, day/night, beach BBQ, trap diving, trolling, bottom fishing etc.

It is always best to visit their village with me to arrange exactly what you require a few days before your proposed trip and pay a deposit. We are a couple of kilometers from the Gipsy Village so when you arrive please make a visit to the village part of a day out, you can meet your crew and arrange everything with them.

The sea gypsy village itself is easy for a taxi to find as it is a well known tourist destination with sea shell stands and fresh fish restaurants.

Please note

Booking a Gypsy Trip involves visiting the Gypsy village 1 or 2 days before your proposed trip in order to organize times (tides) and check the weather forecast. The weather in low season is particularly unreliable!

This is a good opportunity to get to know your hosts and organize exactly what you would like to do and for how long, ie. Snorkeling (bring your own gear) Trolling, Bottom fishing, watch them dive to their own traps, dive with them, day/night, BBQ on beach, etc.

It is also a good time to pay your deposit and have a look round the village or have a fresh seafood meal.

The Sea Gypsies in Phuket – Some Facts

The Sea Gypsy village in Rawai is the largest on Phuket Island. This community is predominantly Buddhist, with quite a few quirks of their own, such as burying their dead as opposed to Buddhist cremation and they call their tribe the "Dtee Bak" (Lions of the Seas).

Most other communities, of which there are many (three on Phuket) are Muslim, although, true to their culture, they mix and match quite happily. This is probably due to the fact, that on a daily basis their lives literarily depend on each other when using the extremely dangerous methods they employ when harvesting from the deep.

Diving, using antiquated air compressors and garden hoses to supply unfiltered air, accounts for more than 50% of the Gypsies fishing income and making their huge fish traps is hard, labour intensive work and well worth seeing.

The Sea Gypsies – Some History

The Sea Gypsies (or Thai–mai or The Moken) are possibly the friendliest Thais you could ever meet, who ask for nothing more that the prospect of feeding themselves as they have done for millennia, from the sea.

Gypsy history is at its best vague, as their language, which is partially Malay, cannot be written down hence no authentic records exist to confirm the origins of this ancient race who claim to have been in these waters for over 2000 years. Although this cannot be proven, it is generally accepted that the Na Goo, as they call themselves, were indeed the first residents of Phuket.

If you are not used to the sun wear a hat and bring plenty of sun-block.

These trips are not for young children or the unfit. These are Sea Gipsy working boats and have no facilities.

A day out with the Sea Gypsies on a long tail boat, watch them dive to their traps, try some line fishing and finish with a fish BBQ on some secluded beach.

Don’t expect “Big Game” when out with the Gypsies as most of their large fish are caught in their Gypsy Fish Traps. That said, fishing with the Gypsies is a privilege, not experienced by many, especially at night which is a must for someone who just loves a rod and reel, or in the Gypsy case, hand line.

For the regular fisherman this will probably be the first time you have not baited your own hook– the Gypsies are that attentive.

All Gypsy trips are weather permitting especially in the “low season” from May to November.

Day time trips should only be undertaken with a view to shading yourself from the sun, hence BBQ’s on the beach.

A Family Affair

Chalong Fishing Park is a small, family run and inexpensive fresh water fishing lake. The sort of place you can go for your breakfast and stay the day without checking with the bank. Many of the local anglers consider themselves as part of the furniture and even us “salties” turn up pretty regularly.

Jez Wilson the owner/manager along with his wife …….. go out of their way to make everyone welcome around their well-stocked lake which is home to many exotic species many of which come in around 40kgs.

For those who are new to fishing “fresh” warm water, Jez is a keen and very knowledgeable angler who is always happy to give advice and share his knowledge of the lake and its inhabitants.

For non-fishing customers including young children entry is free of charge and there is even a small “kiddies” pool and hammocks for that afternoon siesta.

Fun Fishing

Chalong Fishing Park is all about affordable "Fun Fishing" - a family friendly activity where kids under 12 are half price when fishing with an adult.

Fishing here is around a third of the price of many of Phuket's fishing parks with arguably higher catch rates. There are 3 different packages: full day (up to 12 hours) half day ( up to 6 hours) and a 3 hour session designed for walk in customers, novices and customers with children.

There are 20 different species of fish and more being added all the time, with several very good sized fish over 40 KG.

There is a fully stocked bar and a restaurant serving Thai and Western dishes right next to the lake as well as a small pool and showers.

Located in Rawai, it is very easily accessed from nearby Chalong, Kata and Karon and is only 20 minutes from Patong.
